Variety description

10 August 2026

The Royal Gold variety originated as a bud mutation of the Springtime variety. Despite its origin from a white-fleshed variety, it possesses yellow-fleshed fruits, although it genetically retains the white-flesh factor. Breeding was aimed at achieving early maturity and adaptation to climates with mild winters, such as the Central Valley of California.

The fruits are of an early maturity group. The variety is characterized by high productivity and requires mandatory fruit thinning to achieve quality size. It is used primarily for fresh consumption and also serves as important genetic material for breeding new varieties.

There is a risk of confusion between this variety and more modern representatives of the Royal series bred by Floyd Zaiger, such as Royal Glory. The original Royal Gold variety is historical material from 1965 and possesses different characteristics than the later hybrids of the series.
