VENERE represents an ancient local Italian population known as Poppa di Venere ("Venus' breast"). It is a traditional form, the first description of which dates back to the late 18th — early 19th century, and in modern scientific classification, it is considered a cultivar-population rather than a standardized variety.
The variety's name is due to the characteristic morphology of the fruits, which have a pronounced elongated tip ("nipple") in the area of the basin. Since it is a landrace, natural variations may be observed within the population, and standardized data on ripening periods or tree parameters are absent.
