Variety description

10 August 2026

The plant is a deciduous thorny subshrub with arcuate curved shoots 1 to 3 meters long. The stems are densely covered with characteristic reddish glandular bristles. The berries are edible aggregate fruits of oblong shape, which change color from bright red to dark purple during ripening.

Flowering of the species occurs in June-July, and fruiting on second-year shoots occurs in late summer or early autumn. The plant is photophilous, prefers moist humus soils, and has winter hardiness down to -29 °C. It has the ability to spread rapidly and is considered an invasive species in a number of regions.

Rubus phoenicolasius is used as an ornamental crop for hedges and for obtaining berries suitable for fresh consumption or processing. The species is also used in breeding as source material for hybridization with other representatives of the genus.
