The name Mesten translates as "local" and is applied to various crops of folk selection. In relation to savory, this means traditional genetic material that has been cultivated for centuries in Bulgaria without being bred by a specific breeding company.

The plants have a strong aroma typical of the crop. Their height varies from 20 to 40–50 cm depending on growing conditions. Savory is undemanding to soil, but prefers fertile and well-drained sites; it does not tolerate stagnant moisture, but requires moderate watering.

Cultivation is possible by transplanting or direct seeding into the soil; the crop is often used as a companion plant. The plant is widely used in cooking as a spicy-aromatic additive to soups, meat dishes, and salads.
