The plant forms a dense tussock. Leaves are wider than those of the original species and exhibit spiral growth. The upper side of the leaf is blue-green, the lower side is steel blue.
Flowering begins in March–April and lasts until June. The spikelet inflorescences are initially black, later becoming cream. The plant is evergreen or semi-evergreen, frost-hardy and winter-hardy.
It adapts well to various soil types, tolerates moisture, and exhibits drought tolerance after rooting. It prefers sunny locations or partial shade; it does not tolerate full dense shade or waterlogging. The species possesses resistance to Verticillium wilt.
