The Pimiento type brings together local Spanish tomato varieties whose fruits resemble peppers in appearance. This material is preserved and studied to prevent the loss of genetic diversity and for inclusion in breeding programs to create new hybrids.

Tomatoes of this type are distinguished by a high content of soluble solids, sugars, and also amino acids such as GABA, glutamate, and glutamine. The average fruit weight varies in the range of 130–190 g.

The material is valued for its potential for adaptation to environmental stress conditions, including soil salinity. The variety name in Spanish literally means "pepper," which requires strict control of the Latin name when searching for scientific data to avoid confusion with the crop Capsicum annuum.
