The variety is mid-late. Classic varieties belong to indeterminate tall plants that require staking, however, there are also determinate dwarf forms, such as «S. Marzano Nano».

The elongated plum-shaped fruits reach a weight of 70–120 g. The pulp is distinguished by its density, low water content, and thin skin. The taste is characterized by richness and a balanced ratio of sugars and acids.

The plant requires support or cultivation on a trellis. The variety is an heirloom, and there are many biotypes bred within the framework of selection programs for its restoration.
