The Madinina variety is a local eggplant cultivar whose name derives from the indigenous name for the island of Martinique. The line was obtained by specialists at the I.R.A.T. institute as a result of breeding work involving the genetic material of the SM164 line, which originated in Ceylon.
In crop production, the variety is primarily known as a parental component of the F1 Kalenda hybrid, which was widely cultivated in the Antilles in the 1970s and early 1980s. The variety was also used in breeding programs to improve eggplant resistance to diseases, including fruit anthracnose.
