Sorghum variety «Apollon» was bred by a group of breeders, including V. F. Varenik, G. K. Dremlyuk, V. M. Sokolov, and A. F. Khokhlov. The plants of the variety belonged to the third cultivar type.

During the period of the variety's use, significant shortcomings were identified: a considerable propensity for lodging and branching in certain years, which hindered mechanized harvesting. Due to these characteristics, the variety was excluded from the register and is currently considered obsolete.
