The variety is a vigorous annual with hollow stems, derived from six cycles of recurrent selection from populations of the varieties Yuchi, Amclo, and Meechee. Approximately 95% of the seeds have a dark coat, which provides increased resistance to soil-borne pathogens.
The plant matures earlier than the variety Apache; the peak flowering period in Texas conditions occurs around May 10. The variety is high-yielding, suitable for livestock grazing as it has a low bloat potential, and also for hay production.
The crop is adapted to well-drained loamy and sandy-loam soils at pH 6.0–6.5. It is used for overseeding into pastures of perennial warm-season grasses to provide early spring forage and to create food plots for wildlife.
