The Tassilo variety was obtained in Weihenstephan as a result of a cross between a French landrace and a Bavarian local variety from the surroundings of Sipbachzell; a connection with the Arras variety is also mentioned. The genetics of this variety served as the basis for many subsequent European breeding lines.
During its period of popularity, the variety was classified as wheat with high baking qualities, corresponding to the "A" category of that time, and good gluten characteristics. The yield of the variety was moderate, and its winter hardiness was determined by its origin from French lines.
At present, the variety is considered obsolete and is not used in commercial production. The primary purpose was cultivation as food wheat for the baking industry.
