The variety belongs to winter durum wheat and is characterized as an intensive-type drought-tolerant variety. It is widely used in breeding practice as a standard sample for evaluating the biological and economic traits of new breeding lines.

When working with this variety, it is necessary to consider that the name «Континент» is also used for soft wheat (Triticum aestivum) varieties; therefore, mandatory clarification of the species is required.
