The variety was obtained through selection from Moroccan landraces and for a long time remained one of the main durum wheat varieties in Cyprus. Due to its genetic characterization, the variety was widely used in the Mediterranean region as source material for the breeding of new crops.

The plant is a tall, mid-late to late variety. It possesses moderate disease resistance, however, it is prone to lodging compared to modern semi-dwarf forms. Historically, the variety was intended for rainfed agriculture in arid regions.
