The Cathay variety belongs to the parrot tulip group and is a mutant derived from the Purple Flag variety. The plant is characterized by the presence of "ruffled" purple petals, corresponding to shade N79C according to the KAVB international classification.

The variety is intended for cultivation in gardens and parks, as well as for cut flower production. Information regarding the exact height of the plant, flowering periods, and disease resistance is absent in reference sources.
