The Royal Pretender variety belongs to the lily-flowered tulip group. The plant has a strong, upright stem and lanceolate leaves of dark grey-green color. The flower is distinguished by an orange-red petal coloration with the pointed tips characteristic of this group.

Flowering of the variety occurs in mid-to-late spring. The tulip is suitable for use in flower beds, borders, container gardening, and cut flowers. The variety is sensitive to excess soil moisture and strong winds, and is susceptible to a number of diseases, including Botrytis and viral infections.

When planting, bulbs are placed at a depth of 10–15 cm in fertile, drained soil in the autumn. After the flowering period, faded inflorescences are removed, leaving the foliage until it dies off completely to nourish the bulb.
