The variety is autochthonous to the Iberian Peninsula, and its parents are the Alfrocheiro and Patorra varieties. The berries have a violet-blue hue and thick skin, and ripening occurs in mid-season.

The plant demonstrates high quality performance when grown on slopes with yield limitation; granite and slate soils are preferred. Traditional cultivation regions include the Dão zone in Portugal and Bierzo in Spain.

Wines produced from this variety are characterized by fresh acidity and tannin content. Their aromatic profile contains notes of dark fruits, mint, thyme, and black pepper, as well as nuances of tobacco and spices.
