The EP1 line was developed from the Spanish landrace Lizagarote. It is considered a historically significant elite European line that has been widely used in breeding programs to study genetics, heterosis, and adaptation to various climatic conditions, particularly cold climates.
The plant is of the flint grain type and belongs to the early-maturing germplasm group. The line is valued for its contribution to maintaining heterosis in flint × dent crosses, as well as for specific characteristics regarding cell wall digestibility and response to water deficit.
