The EP42 line was obtained from the open-pollinated 'Tuy' maize population and is classified as an early-maturing European Flint genotype. It is not a commercial variety and is used primarily for research purposes in breeding programs.
The plant possesses good yield potential, early seedling vigor, and exhibits cold tolerance compared to a number of other lines. In breeding work, EP42 is used as a source of favorable alleles for hybrid improvement and as a control sample in studies of biochemical composition, including phenolic acid and carotenoid content.
In studies, this line is characterized as susceptible to the Mediterranean corn borer. It also serves as model material for studying resistance to lodging and pathogens, such as Fusarium, and is used in sweet corn breeding.
