The maize hybrid, known as XL 72 or Dekalb XL 72, was developed by the breeding company DeKalb and was widely used in agricultural production in the 1970s–1980s, especially in the USA. The variety was designed for responsiveness to intensive cultivation methods, including irrigation.
In agronomic reports of that period, the hybrid appeared in yield trials as a commercially significant variety. In later scientific studies of the early 2000s, XL 72 was used as a model object in vegetation experiments aimed at studying plant response to the impact of heavy metals.
