A fungal disease of carrots caused by Phoma rostrupii, manifesting as dry rot of root crops during storage and necrotic spots on the aerial organs of seed plants.

The disease is caused by the fungus Phoma rostrupii (anamorph) or Leptosphaeria libanotis (teleomorph). Grayish-brown spots appear on the leaves and petioles of first-year plants; however, the disease causes the most serious damage to seed plants and root crops in storage.
On seed plants, the infection manifests as dark purplish spots and streaks on petioles and stems, which become covered with black pycnidia. During storage, depressed spots appear on the root crops, underneath which the tissue turns brown, becomes pithy, and forms cavities containing mycelium.
