Potato gangrene

Solanum tuberosum L.

A fungal disease of potatoes manifesting as sunken stem lesions and specific tuber rots. The causative agents are fungi of the genus Phoma, with Phoma exigua var. foveata considered the most aggressive.

The primary causative agents of the disease are the imperfect fungi Phoma exigua var. foveata and Phoma exigua var. exigua. The species Phoma andigena, which causes black leaf burn, is also encountered. The pathogens differ in morphological characteristics, such as the ability to produce a diffuse pigment, and the degree of aggressiveness in tuber tissue infection.

On the stems, symptoms appear during the flowering period as elongated sunken spots, on which small pycnidia eventually form. Infection of the tubers is detected after harvest as circular, firm lesions. Cavities lined with grayish mycelium form inside the tuber, and the affected zone spreads inward in a conical shape. Resistance to the disease is a quantitative trait; no specific R-genes have been identified in breeding.
