Fusarium Wilt of China Aster

Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees

Tracheomycotic wilt caused by the specialized fungal form Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. callistephi. The pathogen penetrates through the roots, clogging the plant's vascular system.

The disease is caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. callistephi, which persists in the soil as chlamydospores and can be transmitted via seed material. The infection enters the plant through the root system and spreads through the vessels, leading to impaired nutrient uptake and characteristic browning of the stem's vascular tissues.

External symptoms appear as yellowing and wilting of the leaves, often developing unilaterally. Plants are most susceptible during the budding or early flowering stages, although infection is also possible at the seedling stage. Resistance of aster cultivars to Fusarium wilt is quantitative in nature, and specific resistance genes have not yet been identified.
