The primary causal agent of helminthosporium disease on triticale is the fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana, which has a teleomorph Cochliobolus sativus. The disease affects the root system, stem base, leaves, and grain. In the case of root rot in seedlings, browning of the stem base and the leaf sheath of the first leaf is observed, leading to stunted growth and lodging. Leaf infection manifests as the formation of small light-brown spots with a dark border, which, upon merging, cause premature drying of the leaf blade.
The infection also affects the grain, causing the "black point" symptom, which negatively impacts the germination of seed material. Specific resistance genes in triticale to this pathogen have not been mapped; therefore, breeding relies on the use of resistance donors from parental forms—wheat and rye—as well as the assessment of juvenile resistance. The degree of cultivar infection is assessed using a scoring scale based on field trials under natural infectious pressure.
