The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Drechslera avenae (anamorph), whose sexual stage is known as Pyrenophora avenae. The infection is often seed-borne, manifesting on seedlings as leaf twisting and necrotic longitudinal stripes on the coleoptiles, which leads to stunted growth in young plants.
On growing plants, symptoms appear as elliptical or elongated spots of gray or brown color, surrounded by a characteristic reddish-brown margin. Under high humidity, an olive-colored coating of conidial sporulation forms on the affected areas. Infection of panicles and caryopses leads to the formation of shriveled grain and a decrease in the sowing and yield quality of the crop.
