The disease is caused by the fungus Bipolaris oryzae (conidial stage) or Cochliobolus miyabeanus (asexual stage). The disease affects seedlings, causing a grey-olive mold on the root collar. Characteristic brown spots with a dark brown border and a golden halo, resembling sesame seeds, form on the leaves; severe development leads to leaf senescence.

Infection of the panicles and glumes is accompanied by the appearance of dark brown spots with an olive coating. This results in the formation of shriveled, discolored grains, which reduces the quality and germination of the seed material. Resistance to the pathogen is more often associated with agronomic factors and plant silicon supply than with specific resistance genes.
