A group of fungal diseases to which popcorn shows increased susceptibility. The disease is caused by the pathogens Bipolaris maydis and Exserohilum turcicum, which infect leaves, stems, and ears.

For popcorn, the most dangerous are southern corn leaf blight, caused by Bipolaris maydis, and northern corn leaf blight, caused by Exserohilum turcicum. A particular threat is race T of the southern corn leaf blight pathogen, which is capable of infecting not only the foliage but also the husks and grain, a phenomenon associated with the specifics of cytoplasmic male sterility in the plants.
The symptoms of northern corn leaf blight manifest as large, spindle-shaped lesions up to 20 cm in size, leading to rapid leaf desiccation. Southern corn leaf blight is characterized by small elliptical spots, and in cases of infection by race T, a felt-like mycelial growth often forms on the ears.
In breeding programs aimed at increasing popcorn resistance, Ht-group genes such as Ht1, Ht2, and Ht3 are utilized. Breeders also employ screening of lines from germplasm banks to identify resistance donors, as no specific resistance genes unique to this group of corn have been identified.
