Heterosis in rapeseed is the effect of first-generation hybrids outperforming parental lines or standards, manifested in increased seed yield, oil content, and plant stability.

To evaluate the effect in rapeseed, true heterosis indices are used by comparing F1 with the best parental line, and competitive heterosis by comparing the hybrid with a released standard variety. Regarding winter rapeseed seed yield, true heterosis can reach 80–125%, while competitive heterosis typically varies in the range of 13–30%. For spring rapeseed, average heterosis values for yield range from 20–50%.
Heterosis is manifested not only in seed weight but also in yield structure components, such as the number of pods where values can reach 100%, as well as in vigorous early growth, improved branching, and resistance to environmental stress factors. Realizing the potential of hybrids in production requires the use of first-generation seeds obtained via cytoplasmic male sterility systems, as the heterosis effect is lost in F2.
