Carrot Maturity Groups

Daucus carota L.

Classification of carrot varieties based on the duration of the growing season from emergence to technical maturity, which determines harvest timing and end-use of the produce.

In the reference 415 varieties crop Carrot, where this is mentioned in the description.

Carrot maturity group is defined by the number of days from full emergence to the onset of technical maturity of the root crops. In Russian practice, three main categories are distinguished: early-maturing varieties that ripen in 55–100 days, mid-maturing (100–120 days), and late-maturing, with a growing season exceeding 120–125 days.

This trait directly influences cultivation technology and crop utilization. Early-maturing varieties are intended for bunching and summer consumption, but they have poor storage qualities. Mid-maturing and late-maturing varieties possess better storability and serve as the basis for winter storage.

Agronomists use maturity groups to organize a continuous harvest schedule. In field conditions, technical maturity is assessed by visual indicators: the shape of the root tip (characteristic of the variety type) and the condition of the shoulders protruding above the soil surface.
