Cultivation
Pelargonium peltatum (L.) L'Hér.
Cultivation of Pelargonium peltatum in containers requires ensuring high substrate aeration and strict water balance control to prevent edema, to which the smooth, waxy leaves of this species are prone.
In the reference 80 varieties crop Ivy-leaf geranium, where this is mentioned in the description.
Pelargonium peltatum has thin leaves with a dense cuticle, making it sensitive to osmotic overload during overwatering. Stagnant moisture and poor substrate aeration provoke the development of edema — the appearance of brown corky spots and tissue glassiness, which disrupts the formation of the plant's cascading shape.
To ensure optimal development, a structured substrate with high air permeability is required. It is important to avoid overwatering the lower soil layers, as the impairment of root hair function leads to a state of "stasis" and growth retardation. Watering should be moderate, with mandatory drying of the soil between applications.
Agrotechnology in containers includes mandatory pinching of trailing varieties two weeks after planting to stimulate branching. Planting density ranges from 16 to 25 plants per square meter depending on the pot diameter, while excessive crowding requires special control for the prevention of Botrytis and rust.
