A method of growing roses in a limited volume of soil that requires control of the water regime, thermal insulation of the root system, and adherence to container depth parameters.

For container cultivation of roses, the volume of the container is critical, determined by a vigorous root system with a taproot. The minimum container depth is 40 cm, and the required volume varies depending on the group: from 4–10 L for miniature roses to 30 L or more for climbing varieties. Planting is carried out with the root collar buried three fingers below the substrate level to protect against freezing and to stimulate root formation.

Plants are sensitive to root aeration, so the substrate must provide a balance of water-holding capacity and air permeability, and the drainage layer must occupy up to 20% of the container height. The most important difference from soil-based cultivation is the need for thermal insulation of the pots to prevent overheating in summer and freezing in winter, as well as providing a dormancy period for outdoor plants by burying or covering the containers.
