Rose bud

Rosa L.

The rose bud is a key morphological descriptor of a cultivar, an indicator of product quality, and an important developmental stage recorded during variety testing.

In the reference 668 varieties crop Rose, where this is mentioned in the description.

In variety testing, the budding stage is recorded when 10% of plants have peduncles reaching 5–10 mm in length with a flower primordium formed at the apex. In breeding and cultivar description, characteristic bud shapes are distinguished: high-centered (urn-shaped), cupped, globular, rosette, and flat, with the ratio of height to diameter serving as a varietal trait.

Quantitative parameters of the bud, such as its length and thickness, correlate with stem length and serve as criteria for the marketability of cut flowers. For roses with a stem length of 100 cm, a bud diameter of approximately 5.5–6.5 cm is considered standard. The density and firmness of the bud at the base are also assessed as indicators of the cultivar's freshness and transportability.

The intensity of budding, measured by the number of days from the start of the growing season, serves as a criterion for productivity when grown in protected ground. The state of the bud is also a critical factor in hybridization, determining the plant's readiness for artificial pollination.
