For modern commercial varieties, the standard is at least 20 buds per spike with 8–10 flowers opening simultaneously, while for miniature groups, this figure is 5–6 flowers.
The "colored bud" phase serves as an important criterion for the plant's readiness for cutting, which is traditionally carried out when the first bottom bud opens. Quality bud formation directly determines the market value of the crop, and their development and ability to open are highly dependent on the agronomic background and phytosanitary condition of the plantings, particularly regarding thrips infestation.
