Container Tomato Cultivation

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A cultivation technique for tomatoes in limited substrate volume that requires intensive management of irrigation and nutrition, along with the selection of cultivars with a compact habit. This method provides plant mobility and isolation from soil-borne pathogens despite the low buffering capacity…

In the reference 154 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

For successful container tomato cultivation, the volume of the root-inhabiting medium is critical. Large-fruited cultivars require a minimum of 10 liters of substrate, while 3–5 liters are sufficient for super-dwarfs. Insufficient volume leads to rapid nutrient depletion, soil desiccation, and physiological disorders such as fruit cracking due to uneven moisture levels.

Specialized mixtures with high water-holding capacity and aeration, based on peat, perlite, coconut coir, or bark, are used as substrates. Since containers have minimal buffering capacity, daily irrigation and regular application of low-concentration fertilizer solutions are necessary, as tomatoes are intensive consumers of nutrients.

The technology imposes strict requirements on genotype selection: priority is given to determinate, standard, and dwarf forms with shortened internodes. Indeterminate cultivars under this cultivation method require increased container volumes exceeding 20–30 liters and the mandatory installation of supports to prevent toppling due to high wind resistance.
