Root rots — Onion

Allium cepa L. var. cepa

A complex disease of onions caused by soil-borne fungi and pseudofungi of the genera Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Phoma. It leads to root necrosis, growth retardation, leaf wilting, and subsequent softening of the onion basal plate.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Onion, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens infect the root system, causing it to turn brownish-red, black, or pinkish. Infection development is accompanied by gradual root necrosis, yellowing, and wilting of the leaves starting from the tips, which often leads to stand thinning and the death of young plants.

In the case of Fusarium basal rot, the pathogenic process spreads to the base of the bulb, causing it to soften, rot, and develop a characteristic mycelial growth on the basal plate. Unlike some other onion diseases, specific resistance genes have not been established for the pathogens of these rots; therefore, breeding is based on the evaluation of lines under infectious field conditions.
