Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group
The main pathogens of sugar beet are represented by the sugar beet cyst nematode, which causes specific “bearded” root proliferation, as well as species that provoke gall formation and tissue deformation.

The most damaging species is Heterodera schachtii, the infestation of which manifests as patches of stunted growth and plant wilting. A characteristic diagnostic sign is the formation of multiple lateral roots, on which the pest's cysts are visible, whereas meloidogynosis causes the formation of galls on taproots, and Ditylenchus dipsaci leads to leaf deformation and rot of hypocotyl tissues.
The genetic resistance of hybrids is based on the use of NBS-LRR type genes, as well as specific loci, such as RZ-3 or R6m-1, associated with resistance to root-knot nematodes. Breeding programs are working on the introduction of complex resistance, allowing for the overcoming of the diversity of pathogen races, which complicates nematode control via crop rotation methods.
