The primary pest of the crop is the beet cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii; susceptibility to the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne chitwoodii and Meloidogyne fallax has also been noted. When infested with Heterodera schachtii, lemon-shaped cysts form on the roots, and the root system develops a characteristic appearance of a dense network of lateral roots, known as bearding.
Externally, the infestation manifests as a general suppression of plant growth. White mustard is actively used as a trap crop, which stimulates the hatching of larvae from cysts, after which the development of nematodes in the roots is inhibited. The resistance of cultivars is determined not by specific genes, but by resistance classes based on the evaluation scales used in official variety trials.
