Pepper Nematodes

Root-knot nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne cause damage to the pepper root system by forming specific swellings called galls on the roots. This leads to vascular dysfunction, stunted plant growth, and premature death.

The primary pathogens of the disease are the species Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica, M. arenaria, M. enterolobii, and M. floridensis. Upon penetrating root tissues, nematodes induce the formation of giant feeding cells, which results in the appearance of characteristic galls and deformation of the root system.

Genetic resistance of the crop to nematodes is controlled by dominant genes Me1, Me3, Me4, Me7, Mech1, Mech2, and N, which are often localized in clusters on the ninth chromosome of pepper. The effectiveness of these genes depends on their specificity to particular nematode species and races, which is taken into account when breeding cultivars with pyramided resistance genes.
