Soybean cyst nematode

Glycine max (L.) Merr.

The soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines) is an obligate sedentary parasite of soybean that causes stunted growth and reduced nitrogen fixation. The primary signs of infestation include patches of yellowing plants and the presence of small brown cysts on the roots.

In the reference 35 varieties crop Soybean, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen responsible is Heterodera glycines from the Heteroderidae family. External symptoms of infestation in the aerial part include stunting, yellowing of leaves, and delayed growth, which often resemble nutrient deficiency or drought. On the roots, there is suppressed nodule development, 'fraying' of the root system, and the appearance of small lemon-shaped females that transform into brown cysts.

Pest populations are characterized by high variability, which is assessed using the HG Type classification based on the nematodes' ability to overcome cultivar resistance. The main genetic sources of resistance are lines PI 88788 and Peking, controlled by the Rhg1 and Rhg4 loci. However, prolonged use of limited sources of resistance has led to nematode adaptation and a decrease in the effectiveness of protection.
