Root-knot nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne are obligate endoparasites of tomato roots that cause meloidogynosis. Infestation leads to the formation of galls, stunted plant development, and significant yield losses.

For tomatoes, the most significant species are Meloidogyne incognita, Meloidogyne javanica, and Meloidogyne hapla. Parasitism is accompanied by the formation of specific swellings on the roots, known as galls, which impair the uptake of water and mineral nutrients. Externally, the infestation manifests as stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during hot periods, which reduces yields by up to 80%.

In tomato breeding for resistance, the dominant Mi (Mi-1.2) gene plays a key role, providing protection against M. incognita, M. javanica, and M. arenaria, but it is ineffective against M. hapla. In seed catalogs, resistance is indicated by the code N, where HR (High Resistance) indicates the presence of genetic protection against major nematode species, often confirmed using molecular markers such as Mi23.
