Abundance and Duration of Flowering — New Guinea Impatiens

Impatiens New Guinea Group

This trait is a genetically determined property of branching and the ability of shoots to form buds in leaf axils. The assessment is based on descriptive characteristics and the plant's ability to maintain its ornamental value for 10–12 months with a flower diameter of 5–12 cm.

Flowering abundance is determined by branching intensity and the continuous formation of reproductive buds. In variety testing practice, including UPOV standards, the trait is assessed during the full bloom stage and described as profuse or mass bud formation, which is directly correlated with a flower diameter of 5 to 12 cm.

Realization of flowering potential is critically dependent on agrotechnical factors: long daylight hours (14–15 hours) and a strict nutritional balance. Excess nitrogen stimulates vegetative growth to the detriment of flowering, while low light intensity causes shoot elongation. Stress conditions, such as temperature fluctuations and disruption of the water regime, trigger bud abortion.
