Verbena flower color is a pseudo-qualitative trait used for varietal identification. It is determined by a combination of anthocyanins, carotenoids, and flavonoids, and is independent of soil acidity.

According to UPOV principles, verbena flower color is assessed visually using color charts and the presence of patterns such as an 'eye', margin, or reticulate design. The spectrum includes white, pink, red, orange, blue, lilac, and violet, which may be either solid or multi-colored.

Biologically, the color is due to the accumulation of anthocyanins, carotenoids, and flavonoids. Unlike a number of other ornamental crops, verbena does not change its hue depending on soil pH; however, color intensity and stability may vary under the influence of cultivation conditions and light exposure. For the practical purposes of breeding and landscape design, the key indicator is the resistance of the color to fading in the sun.
