Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser.
Inflorescence color is a key varietal trait that depends on the plant's genetic predisposition and the chemical composition of the substrate. The intensity and hue of the flowers change under the influence of soil pH and the presence of mobile aluminum ions.

In agronomic practice, color is assessed visually during different flowering phases to determine the intensity of hues and the stability of color expression. The trait is not fixed: in acidic soils with a pH of 4.5–5.5, the accumulation of aluminum ions causes the inflorescences to develop blue and light blue tones, whereas in neutral and alkaline conditions (pH 6.0 and above), pink, red, and purple hues predominate.
The genetic potential of a cultivar determines its degree of environmental dependence: there are both stable forms and cultivars prone to metamorphosis, while white cultivars typically do not change color. Color management is achieved by controlling the acidity of the substrate; however, disrupting the nutritional balance while attempting to alter the color of plants not genetically predisposed to such changes may trigger physiological disorders, including chlorosis.
