Hydrangea macrophylla is characterized by intense transpiration and a high susceptibility to wilting, which requires cut flowers to be placed in water immediately. To improve water uptake due to partial lignification of the stem, it is recommended to make a transverse or cross-shaped cut at the base and slightly crush the lower section.
The cultivation technology for cut flowers requires a three-year cycle from rooting to obtaining marketable product. Harvesting is carried out after the inflorescences reach full maturity; 'autumn' inflorescences possess the greatest vase life, remaining fresh for up to two weeks.
