Suitability of Alstroemeria for cutting

Alstroemeria L.

The suitability of Alstroemeria for cutting is determined by the unique stem-pulling technique, the stage of inflorescence opening, and stringent requirements for shoot morphology.

In the reference 151 varieties crop Alstroemeria, where this is mentioned in the description.

A unique feature of harvesting Alstroemeria is the technique of pulling the stem from the rhizome instead of traditional cutting. This method helps stimulate flowering and prevents the development of fungal infections in the remaining tissues; however, it requires caution to avoid damaging the root system.

The degree of readiness for harvest depends on the marketing objectives: for local market sales, the opening of the first three flowers in the inflorescence is optimal, whereas for transportation, harvesting at the colored but unopened bud stage is acceptable. The market quality of a cultivar is assessed by crop density, reaching 260 shoots per square meter, as well as by stem strength and the presence of at least 7–10 flowers per inflorescence.

The post-harvest viability of the crop, which ranges from 10–20 days, is limited by sensitivity to ethylene, which causes bud drop, and by physiological leaf yellowing. An important selection characteristic is also the resupination effect, in which the leaf petioles rotate 180 degrees.
