Sheep's fescue is a drought-tolerant xeromesophyte that does not require intensive irrigation. The crop is extremely sensitive to excessive moisture and waterlogging, which provoke root rots.

Sheep's fescue is adapted to growing in conditions of moisture deficit due to the presence of a waxy coating on its leaves. In most regions, it develops successfully under dryland farming conditions and does not require regular irrigation, making it suitable for xeriscaping projects.

For turfgrass use, the irrigation requirement is rated as low to moderate. During periods of active growth, it is recommended to maintain uniform moisture while avoiding waterlogging and ensuring the soil is allowed to dry out between waterings.

The plant reacts extremely negatively to water stagnation and high water tables, preferring sites with good drainage. Excessive irrigation on poorly drained soils leads to a loss of ornamental value, lodging of the stand, and the development of root rots.
