Growing hemp in open-field conditions requires selecting varieties based on ecotypes and photoperiod response, as well as a differentiated approach to seeding rates for fiber or seed production.

When cultivating Cannabis sativa, the choice of variety is determined by its classification into Central Russian, Southern, or Northern ecotypes, which are adapted to specific zones. The crop is sensitive to photoperiod, making the choice between photoperiod-sensitive and autoflowering forms critical for regions with short growing seasons.

Seeding technology depends on the intended use: high-density planting with rates of up to 3 million/ha is used to increase stem yield and total fiber output, while lower density planting optimizes seed material development. An important feature is the rapid initial growth of seedlings, which limits the possibility of pre-emergence harrowing, and the use of monoecious varieties to simplify harvesting processes.
