For successful field cultivation of cucumber, it is critical that the soil warms up to 20°C at a depth of 4–5 cm, as the crop is extremely sensitive to early cold snaps. Plants adapted to open-air conditions develop a firmer fruit skin and accumulate higher levels of sugars and essential oils.
The cultivation technology includes the traditional ground-trailing method or the trellis system, which requires intensive irrigation due to the high rate of moisture evaporation. The breeding of cultivars for field cultivation is focused on increasing field resistance to pathogens, such as downy mildew and Fusarium wilt, as well as on tolerance to temperature fluctuations.
