Open ground — Hibiscus moscheutos

Hibiscus moscheutos is an herbaceous perennial whose above-ground part dies back annually for the winter, leaving overwintering buds in the soil. Under open-ground conditions, the plant demonstrates heat-loving tendencies, beginning active vegetation only after the soil has warmed up sufficiently. In the autumn, agricultural practices require mandatory pruning of the stems to a height of 7–10 cm from the ground surface.

The most important biological characteristic of the species is its high demand for moisture. The plant prefers soils rich in organic matter and successfully tolerates conditions of temporary waterlogging, which distinguishes it from most ornamental crops that suffer from waterlogging. For full flowering, open sunny areas receiving at least 6–8 hours of sunlight per day are required.

When planting in a garden, the plants require spatial isolation with an interval of about 1 meter between bushes. This is necessary to ensure air circulation, which prevents the development of diseases, and to account for the large dimensions of the plant, which can reach 1.5–2 meters in height.
