Plant height — Hibiscus moscheutos

Hibiscus moscheutos is characterized by high variability in plant height, determined by the genetics of the cultivar and growing conditions. Most wild species and cultivars reach heights of 0.9 to 2.4 m. Compact bred forms, such as the Luna, Disco Belle, and Tiny Tot series, are limited to a height of 60–90 cm.

The trait is measured from the soil level to the peak point of the shoots during the period of mass flowering. Due to the herbaceous nature of the aerial part of the plant, which dies back annually in winter, height is a seasonal indicator, the intensity of which directly depends on the timeliness of spring pruning.

Tall forms of Hibiscus moscheutos are prone to lodging due to the wind resistance of large flowers, which requires the mandatory installation of supports. In container cultivation, the choice of varietal height determines the requirements for container volume, as a discrepancy in volume can lead to shoot etiolation and reduced flowering.
