Field Cultivation of Common Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Growing common beans in open field conditions requires soil temperatures to reach +12…+14 °C due to the crop's thermophilic nature and frost sensitivity. Key factors include selecting light soils to ensure unimpeded cotyledon emergence and the use of specific Rhizobium phaseoli bacteria for nitroge…

In the reference 141 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

The common bean is highly sensitive to frost, which causes the crop to perish. Sowing in open ground is carried out exclusively after the soil at a depth of 10 cm has warmed to +12…+14 °C, as seeds are prone to rapid decay in cold soil. The crop is extremely demanding regarding soil structure: because cotyledons are pushed to the surface during germination, a dense soil crust on heavy soils hinders seedling emergence and may lead to their death.

A specific biological feature of the bean is the formation of symbiotic relationships with Rhizobium phaseoli bacteria, which are not active with other legume species; this must be considered during inoculation. When growing in open fields, the transplant method is rarely used due to poor tolerance of transplanting. In the nutrition program, the focus is shifted toward phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, as excess nitrogen is undesirable, and topping is sometimes used to stimulate bush branching.
